Have you made homemade pizza in a cast iron skillet before? If not you’re missing out! It produces the most delicious pizza with a crust that’s crispy on the bottom and sides. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!
The best part is how fun any easy they are to make. Either buy your favorite dough or if you’re feeling fancy, make your own. Then put on your favorite toppings. Perfect for a dinner party, an activity to do with your kids, or just a quiet date night in. Now open a bottle of wine (or champagne, our favorite drink with pizza!) and lets get cooking!
Cast Iron Skillet Pizza:
- Pizza dough – bought or homemade (this beer crust is my favorite homemade dough) see dough tips below!
- Olive oil
- Sauce of choice (marinara, garlic olive oil, etc., whatever you prefer)
- Toppings of choice (such as mozzarella, parmesan, veggies, pepperoni, etc.)
Preheat your oven to 500 degrees.
Put about a tablespoon of olive oil at the bottom of your cast iron skillet and swirl it around. Take your dough and stretch it to cover the bottom of the skillet. Top with your favorite sauce and toppings. Brush the edge of the crust with olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt.
Bake for 9-12 minutes, until the pizza is golden and the toppings are bubbling.
Repeat the process for other pizzas.
Topping combinations:
- Tomato sauce, cherry tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, parmesan, basil (after the bake)
- Garlic olive oil, artichoke hearts, fresh mozzarella, parmesan, arugula (after the bake)
- Garlic olive oil, roasted zucchini, cherry tomatoes, parmesan, burrata (after the bake)
- Tomato sauce, pepperoni, banana peppers, fresh mozzarella, parmesan
Equipment:
The Lodge 8 inch cast iron skillet it my favorite. I like it so much, we own 2! You can buy it here and here.
Tips:
Store Bought Dough: I’ve found that when I buy dough from Whole Foods or Trader Joes one ball makes one pizza. Also make sure the dough is at room temperature before you start working with it. Just take it out of the fridge and leave it on the counter for an hour or so.
Homemade Dough: when using the dough recipe linked above, I have found it makes 3-4 pizzas. I recently started using 00 flour in place of all purpose flour and love it! 00 flour is more finely ground and gives it a nicer, I would say smoother texture. It’s a little more expensive and harder to find than regular flour, but I think it’s worth it. This is the exact 00 flour I use.
Baking: We have 2 cast iron skillets, so we bake 2 pizzas at a time.
