This is one of my brother, Nick’s all time favorite foods! We’ve been making it forever, sometimes a random time in the year, but always at Christmas. Honestly, I think my adult brother would find a way to lock me out of my parents house if I didn’t show up with this on Christmas Eve. Now that’s love for a snack mix!
I also make it for Nick’s birthday every May. Salty and addicting, I defiantly understand Nick’s deep love for this!
Homemade Snack Mix:
- 6 cups Rice Chex
- 2 cups Wheat Chex
- 5 cups Cheez-Its
- 3 cups mini pretzels
- 2 1/2 cups cocktail peanuts
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 3 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 Teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 2 1/2 teaspoons Lawry’s season salt
Preheat oven to 250 degrees. In a very large bowl or pot (I use my largest stock pot because it’s larger than my largest bowl) mix Rice Chex, Wheat Chex, Cheez-Its, pretzels, and peanuts. In a small bowl mix oil and all the seasonings. pour the oil mixture over the dry mixture and gently mix. I find using my hands and working to mix from the bottom up works best. Taste and adjust seasonings if needed.
Divide the mixture between two large half sheet pans with edges. Cook for 20 minutes, pull out of the oven and stir. Put back in oven and repeat this 2 more times for a total of an hour cooking time.
Let cool and enjoy!
This keeps for about 10 days in an air-tight container, but I’m sure it won’t be around that long!
Equipment:
- These are the half sheet pans I use – they really are the best!
Tips:
- I love to add rye chips or small bagel chips to the mix, but they’re hard to find! If you find them, leave them out of the mix until its baked. Once the mix is baked stir them in. I find that if you add them from the beginning they dry out too much in the oven and get very hard and crunchy.
